Fall Gardening Checklist: What to Plant in September & October
Just because summer is winding down doesn’t mean your garden has to! In fact, fall is one of the best times of year to plant. The cooler weather, softer sunlight, and more consistent rainfall create ideal conditions for establishing new plants and preparing for next spring’s success. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just getting started, here’s your go-to checklist for what to plant in September and October.
Cold Crops!
Fall is prime time to plant vegetables that thrive in cooler weather. Many of these crops actually taste better after a light frost, as the chill brings out their natural sweetness.
Vegetables to plant now:
Leafy greens – spinach, kale, Swiss chard, lettuce
Brassicas – broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage
Root crops – beets, radishes, turnips, carrots
Garlic & onions – plant cloves and sets in fall for an early summer harvest
Tip: Use row covers or cold frames to extend your harvest and protect tender seedlings from unexpected frosts.
Quick Fall Gardening To-Dos
Clean up spent summer plants and add them to your compost pile.
Mulch garden beds to protect soil and suppress weeds.
