Prep Your Garden Now for a Gorgeous Fall

Late summer is the perfect time to start prepping your garden for a stunning fall show. With a little cleanup and planning now, you’ll be rewarded with rich color, healthy soil, and fresh blooms well into the cooler months.

Refresh Tired Garden Beds

By August, many annuals have finished their big show. Don’t be afraid to pull spent or leggy plants and give your beds a reset. This opens space for fall favorites and reduces disease risk from decaying foliage.

  • Trim back overgrown perennials

  • Pull out dried annuals and weeds

  • Add fresh compost or topsoil to revive nutrients

Plan Your Fall Color Palette

Think golds, purples, oranges, and deep reds. Fall is your chance to get creative with texture and color.

  • Mums & pansies are fall staples that love the cooler weather and bring vibrant cheer to beds, borders, and containers.

  • Don’t forget ornamental cabbage and kale, which add beautiful texture and hold up through light frosts.

Richfield Farms will have fresh mums and pansies arriving soon—keep an eye on our social for updates!

Water & Mulch

Just because it’s late summer doesn’t mean you can slack on watering. Keep plants hydrated, and add a fresh layer of mulch to retain moisture and keep roots cool until fall.

Like anything else in life, a beautiful outcome just requires a bit of planning! If you need any guidance, our experts here at the farm would be more than happy to help!
