Richfield Farms is a family owned and operated farm and garden center established in 1917. During the early years, farming was a twelve month occupation.  With the use of hot bed glass, vegetables were able to be grown year round.  Here, the work was hard and the hours were extensive, yet the land was fertile and the productive allowing farmers to make a living.  Crops such as lettuce, spinach, carrots, beets and broccoli are grown here at our family farm.  The vegetable were supplied to New York City customers via the Morris Canal.  Hey did you know that the farmers coming into this country from Holland and Germany found this Aquakanock section of Clifton (named for the Native Americans) to be the richest soil anywhere!  The water table was right and being east of Garrett Mountain the temperature was ten degrees warmer than many developing areas, giving Clifton farms an added advantage of producing crops to the market sooner.

In 1917, the town was incorporated in the sections of Dutch Hill, Athenia, Albion, Delawanna, Botany, Lakeview, and Richfield which became known as Clifton.  Continuing through time, the original farm stand was built, allowing the flower and produce business to flourish.  Richfield Farms was named.

Another evaluation of the farm business was the growing of field dug pansies, making this a beneficial, horticultural addition. In the time, seedlings and perennials were planted in the field, this beginning the nursery business.  Following construction of the Garden State Parkway in 1954, the farm stand had been moved to its present location, where additional buildings and greenhouses were developed. Although farming continued, the growing of plants and selling of fertilizers became of major importance as the farm land quickly diminished and housing rapidly developed.

In 1977, the farm stand was renovated into an all new look.  During this time, over 200,000 paving blocks we laid, making the garden center more accessible for customers.

Currently the fourth generation has become an active asset to the business and we hope you’ll come and see us soon!
